Gawura School acknowledges the Gadigal Clan as the traditional custodians of the land on which we stand and one of the 29 clans of the Eora Nation which is bordered by the Hawkesbury River to the north, the Nepean River to the west, and the Georges River to the south. We would also like to pay our respects to the Elders past, present, and emerging.

Gawura School sits within St Andrew’s Cathedral School and is a unique, highly regarded, coeducational Kindergarten to Year 6 day school for First Nations children who live at home with their families. We are proud to have been named 2020 Australian School of the Year.

Welcome from the Head of Gawura School and Founders Pastor Ray and Aunty Sharon Minniecon

First Nations leadership is at the heart of Gawura School. Pastor Ray and Aunty Sharon Minniecon, founders of Gawura School nearly 20 years ago, were determined to change fundamentally flawed systems so that First Nations children could enjoy an outstanding, strengths-based, tailored education, in an environment that celebrated the world’s oldest, continuously living culture.

Supported by First Nations mentors and an involved community, John Ralph leads Gawura School, with over 9 years of experience in First Nations education.

Gawura School stands proudly on Gadigal Land in a purpose-built high-rise building. With light-filled learning spaces, we’re a dedicated First Nations school within St Andrew’s Cathedral School.
Small class sizes  
Gawura School intentionally keeps class sizes small – no more than six students per year group. Teachers know each student and can offer personalised support for each learner, giving them every chance to succeed.
Literacy and numeracy focus 
Expert teachers lead with a focus on literacy and numeracy in the early years, building strong foundations for learners, creating pathways and opportunities for years to come.

Guess who came to vi

Guess who came to visit Gawura School last week?

Her Excellency the Honourable Sam Mostyn AC, Governor-General of Australia or, as we now know her, “GG Sam”!

It was truly a wonderful visit for our School and students. Our students proudly demonstrated their deep connection to culture and heritage through dance performances, before enjoying a Q&A with the Governor-General (which of course included a question on which team GG Sam supports), followed by a special reading session with our Kindergarten students.

The visit concluded with a morning tea, providing an opportunity for the Governor-General to meet some of our Secondary students, staff and members of our supportive Gawura community.

Today we gathered at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia on the shores of Circular Quay, to visit the "Tony Albert: Not a Souvenir" exhibition. This was for the Gawura School Parent and Carers and Community Yarning Session, which we do each term.

This is such a worthwhile exhibit to visit. Albert has collected a huge range of tourist souvenirs such as tea towels, ash trays, boomerangs etc to create this witty, yet confronting and at times beautiful artworks that highlight the commodification, misrepresentation and racist portrayal of our Aboriginal Peoples.

Along our guided tour, Gawura parents were able to share their personal insights and lived experiences, bringing deeper relevance and meaning to the artworks.

👑🍩 *100 Days of Kindy!* 🍩👑

Last week our Gawura School Kindergarten students celebrated **100 days of learning** in the sweetest way possible!

The classroom was filled with creativity as the students decorated their own crowns, proudly marking this special milestone, before enjoying some well-earned doughnuts together.

While today was all about fun, it also celebrated 100 days of curiosity, friendship, confidence and growth. In just 100 days, our youngest learners have embraced new experiences, built strong foundations and made wonderful memories together.

Here's to celebrating how far they've come, and all the exciting adventures still to come!

GAWURA SCHOOL HEADS TO UNIVERSITY!

While we create many opportunities and pathways for our students, this week we headed to University!

Our Gawura School Stage 3 students were invited to attend a special lunch at Nura Gili which is the Aboriginal Education Centre at UNSW at Kensington.

Aunty Sharon Minniecon and Mr Ralph attended Nura Gili in Term 2. The university then invited Gawura School to be part of an ongoing program where Aboriginal culture and history are celebrated on the UNSW Kensington Campus along with a number of other primary schools in the surrounding area.

We have connections with the Gadigal Centre at the University of Sydney and the Jumbunna Institute at UTS and also Western Sydney University.
